Overview
This test is useful in the detection of a thyroglossal cyst.
Indications
Suspicion of a thyroglossal cyst
Evaluation of thyroid size and appearance
Pertechnetate Thyroid Scan
A Pertechnetate Thyroid study involves the use of a small amount of radioactive
material. The level of radioactivity used is extremely low and has no side effects.
You will be positioned next to a special detector called a gamma camera. The
camera does not produce and radiation. It will be places close to the part of
the body being imaged.

Patient Preparation
Stop all thyroid medications. Your physician will advise you.
Procedure
You will be given an injection containing a small amount of radioactive material. Twenty
to thirty minutes later painless images of your thyroid gland will be obtained.
